Welcome to the Krononaut Moon landing site

Krononaut Moon (or KronoMoon) is a one-night-of-the-year celebration of time, timelessness & time travel, taking place at various sites when the Full Moon shows up in closest proximity to the March Equinox. [1] Traditionally, KronoMoon night is for welcoming Visitors from the Futures (or Krononauts). Documentation dates back to a gathering in downtown Baltimore, MD, under the Full Moon in March, 1982. [2]

This upcoming spring, the Krononaut Moon will be full at 07:00 UTC on Monday, March 25, 2024, which is also a Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. [3] Some moongazers will be watching the skies on Sunday night, March 24. Then in the following winter, 2025’s Krononaut Moon will see a Total Lunar Eclipse [3] at 07:00 UTC on Friday, March 14, 2025. See our KronoMoon Calendar page to begin making plans.

What is a Krononaut Moon?

  • Krononaut Moon (Kro-no-naut Moon) is community time travel research.
It’s next up on March 25, 2024. All are invited to participate wherever you are.
  • Krononaut Moon is a once-a-year pre-vernal (in the Northern Hemisphere) Full Moon.
Usually in March, it’s a Full Moon like September’s Harvest Moon or January’s Wolf Moon. KronoMoon night occurs within a few days of the March Equinox [1], either before or after. When a holiday is tied to the Moon’s orbit — ie, off the solar calendar grid — it is known as a “moveable feast”. (Much more info can be found in these pages.)
  • Krononaut Moon is an open-community celebration.
It could be your celebration — a night for lunomancers, moondancers, cosmologists, topologists, aspiring astronauts and Krononauts. Even cynical time travel deniers are welcome to observe the night’s various orbitations. It’s a night for embracing the ancient spirit of the Full Moon and contemplating one’s own cosmos — by oneself, with one’s past and future selves, or with friends, colleagues, or the family dog and cat. You might even meet a time traveler.
  • Krononaut Moon is a night and a lab for cosmic experimentation.

It’s what we call community time travel research (or Krononautics). Citizen scientists, conceptual artists, rocketeers, drum circlers, quantum physicists, universities, community and theater groups are encouraged to develop projects around the Krononaut Moon in 2024, 2025, and the years beyond. [4] The location is up to you and your collaborators. We’ll calculate the time and you pick the place.

Footnotes

1. The March Equinox occurs on March 20 in most years. It is more accurately described as the Northward Equinox, as the Sun crosses the equator in the northerly direction. In the Northern Hemisphere it marks the Vernal Equinox, and in the Southern Hemisphere it marks the Autumnal Equinox.

Around at this time, the Sun moves from the house of Pisces into the house of Aries. Similarly, when it is full, the Moon moves from Libra (March’s Worm Moon) into Virgo (April’s Pink Moon). During the Full Moon, the Sun and Moon are in opposite houses, with the Earth floating in between the two. KronoMoon night always occurs within a few days of the Northward Equinox — either before or after. It can shine at its brightest anytime between March 6 and April 3. Today it is easy to calculate the Krononaut Moon for dates far into the future(s).

2. In 1982, the Baltimore Krononauts’ gathering for Visitors from the Futures was covered in: “The Night the Planets were Aligned with Baltimore Lunacy”, New York Times, March 11, 1982. The reporter was one Benjamin Franklin (for real).
In 1978, the Chrononautic Society, which was an earlier iteration of Krononaut Moon, was written up in the Leo-Aquarius chapter of the best-selling astrology book: Linda Goodman’s Love Signs, 1978.

3. A Lunar Eclipse is when the Earth’s shadow darkens all or part of the moon. It can only happen on the Full Moon. There are different types, including the direct-hit Total Lunar Eclipse which will occur on KronoMoon night in March, 2025. A less distinct Penumbral Lunar Eclipse will occur on KronoMoon night in March, 2024.

4. For science, art, philosophy and community groups, March’s Full Moon (and occasionally April’s) is a program scheduling opportunity for you and your wildest dreams. Start off manageably with storytelling, a campfire, or a screening of Chris Marker’s La Jetée or Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys, or the double feature! Host a lecture on the astronomer Hypatia of ancient Alexandria, Egypt, or Quantum Entanglement, or Buddhism or the Fluxus movement. In 2024, events can be scheduled for Sunday, March 24. Next year, the Krononaut Moon in 2025 will put on an especially dramatic show with a Total Lunar Eclipse. Think about some of those possibilities.
